New Adventures

Before I came to Boston, one promise I made myself was that I would take the opportunity of living out here for 2 years to explore the Northeast. After all, one of the main reasons for me to venture out of my CA cocoon/comfort zone was to see and try to understand a bit more of the rest of the US, and since we don't know if I will live here for the rest of my life or not at all once I finish up school, it makes sense to try to take advantage of these opportunities as they come.

And then ...

School happened. And papers, and whatnot, and excuses are excuses, but it wasn't until April that I actually left Boston to visit other parts of this area, when I flew down to DC to see some friends for a weekend. But so far this summer, I've aimed for a new place each month, and I'm happy to say that I'm on track to hit that goal by the time school starts. After which, the excuses will come pouring back in again, I'm sure.

Last weekend Kristy and I went to Rhode Island to see Newport, the summer resort of the gilded age. We saw the summer house of the Vanderbuilts [of interest, I'm sure, to all my international friends who live in Vanderbuilt Hall, or Vandy, as we call it here], and one more ~ French name, I am not so good with those, but it was a house built for living in year round, and not just for show during the season. Since we made a day trip by public transportation that was about all we had time for, except this lovely seaside hike you see above, but it was so, so nice to get outside of Boston, to put on our tourist hat for the day and slip into a time and place far, far removed from our own.

Oh, and I did mention I somehow got bitten by the knitting bug again, right?

Ladies and gentlemen, I present: 14 rows on size 2 needles. o_O. This could be awhile. It is, however, most probably a perfect travel knitting project, as it won't get as bulky, as, say, a sweater. Which I may or may not have decided to start in the middle of the sweltering summer heat.

The middle of summer is THE BEST time to start a bulky sweater! I'm so amazed by knitters. Such focus and concentration and dedication. I will always buy mine! LOL
